What is Holiness?

• A Direct Command: Holiness is God’s direct command for His people; it is not optional.

• A Distinct Lifestyle: Conversion demands a visible change from old patterns. Our lives must match the character of God, who called us. We are to live in reverent fear, remembering we were redeemed by the precious blood of Christ.

• Holiness vs. Moralism: Doing “right” by common sense is not the same as living by God’s will. The story of Cornelius in Acts 10 shows that even a devout and generous person still needs the gospel for salvation. True holiness flows from a transformed heart.

• A Principled Life: A holy life is a principled life. The speaker shared a personal story from 1993 when a pastor’s sermon on living a principled life convicted him. From that day forward, he made it a principle never to be late for church, a decision that had a lasting impact on his discipline.

How Holiness Shows Up in Life

  • 1 Peter 1:15 calls us to be holy in "all manner of conversation," which includes our speech, daily conduct, and how we interact with others. Like a pregnancy, true holiness cannot be hidden and will become evident over time.

  • Scriptural Warnings: Psalm 1 warns against taking counsel from the ungodly, while 2 Corinthians 6:14 warns not to be “unequally yoked with unbelievers.”

  • Illustration: The Yoke of Oxen: A yoke binds two oxen of similar strength to work together. Pairing a strong ox with a weak one leads to imbalance and harm. Spiritually, this means believers should not bind themselves in partnerships with those who cannot support their faith, as it hinders a holy walk.

  • Q&A Clarification: A member asked if we should withdraw from unbelievers even if we believe we can influence them. The response was to engage where there is openness (when they ask questions or show a desire to change) but to maintain boundaries and not form partnerships that pull us away from God.

The Christian's Mission Field

• Main Point: The primary mission field is not inside the church but out in the world among those who do not know Christ. We are called to be a light in the darkness.

• Illustration: The Lit Candle: A lit candle among other lit candles is good, but a single candle taken into a dark room to light other candles serves a more profound purpose. This illustrates our call to evangelize.

• Interacting with Unbelievers: Jesus instructed His disciples to offer peace but to “shake the dust from their feet” and move on if rejected (Luke 10:5-11). We should not waste effort on those who have made it clear they do not want to hear about God. This doesn't mean cutting off all non-religious friends, but it does mean not participating in sinful activities with them, as ungodly company can endanger our salvation if we are not strongly rooted in the Word.

  • Genesis 1:2: Just as the Spirit of God hovered over the formless earth, we asked Him to hover over our families and lives to bring His presence and order.

• Believers Are More Than Conquerors: To be "more than a conqueror" means entering a trial and coming out standing without losing anything. We do not fight alone; Christ fights for us.

• Christ's Sacrifice Guarantees Victory: Jesus endured the cross so that we would not be lost. Just as He rose from the dark grave, believers will also rise out of their dark situations.
